Our expert team includes psychiatrists, psychologists, advanced practice providers, social workers and more. When you meet, they’ll take the time to get to know you and learn about your challenges and goals. Then, they’ll design a treatment plan that matches your needs.
In order to help you manage complex mental health issues or chemical dependency, we may recommend you participate in our treatment programs while staying in the hospital. Or we may recommend you attend sessions during the day and go home at night. Your team will go over all treatment options with you, so you feel confident with your care plan.
What’s the difference between a psychiatrist and a psychologist?
- A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who diagnoses and treats mental, emotional and behavioral conditions. They can prescribe medications and provide other medical treatments. Learn more.

Adult Psychiatry Treatment
Life can be hectic. It can be fast-paced, frustrating and sometimes overwhelming. When the responsibilities and pressures become too much to handle, it can be hard to cope. And that’s when it’s a good idea to reach out for help.
Our mental health professionals are here to support you and help you find ways to handle life’s challenges. We offer comprehensive mental health and chemical dependency programs so that you get expert confidential care that matches your specific needs. Our team of psychiatrists offers personalized treatment for even the most complex psychological, emotional and social issues. And they do it with compassion, sensitivity and respect.
As medical professionals, our psychiatrists can also prescribe and monitor medications that can help with mood, behavior, cognition, perceptions and emotions.

IOP Groups for Mood Disorders
Need a little extra therapy boost? Our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) may be the additional support you need for mood disorders and depression beyond a weekly therapy session.
Our IOP is available four days a week for three and a half hours each day. It typically runs four to six weeks but may be shorter or longer depending on your needs, treatment plan and test results. Our goal is to help you return to work and your daily activities and get back to interacting comfortably with your family and community.

Adult Psychology Treatment
Are depression, anxiety or other mental, emotional or psychosocial challenges making it hard to live the life you want? Our team of experienced and compassionate psychologists can provide nonjudgmental support and expert guidance as you learn how to manage issues affecting your mental health.
Our psychologists specialize in talk therapy (psychotherapy). This treatment uses a variety of techniques to help identify and change unhealthy emotions, behaviors and thoughts. We can use talk therapy to treat mental and emotional challenges related to many conditions and health topics, including:

A substance use disorder can turn your life upside down. Cleveland Clinic has the hope and personalized treatment you need. Our Alcohol & Drug Recovery Centers are based at Lutheran Hospital and Akron General.
Psychiatric Treatment-Resistance Program
If you’ve tried medications and cognitive behavioral therapy, and they just aren’t making a difference, you might need more advanced treatment. Our Psychiatric Treatment-Resistance Program offers therapies to treat even the most challenging psychiatric conditions, including:

In certain cases, your provider may recommend vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) or deep brain stimulation (DBS). If you have PTSD, your provider may go over the possible benefits of a stellate ganglion block. Research has shown that this therapy may slow down an overactive sympathetic nervous system.
Before we begin any treatments, the providers in our Psychiatric Treatment-Resistance Program will go over all your treatment options and talk with you about the potential benefits and risks of each. And they’ll work closely with your other providers to make sure you get comprehensive care.

Here's what you need to know:

Hispanic Behavioral Health Services
Cleveland Clinic’s Center for Behavioral Health provides comprehensive mental health services to Hispanic and Latino individuals and their families. This program located on Cleveland Clinic’s main campus offers psychiatric evaluation, psychotherapy, psychosocial interventions, family education and pharmacotherapy to patients 18 years of age and older.

Clinical Trials
The Neurological Institute advances research into diseases of the brain and spine and conducts clinical therapeutic trials to support patients with neurological disorders. Our multidisciplinary research collaboration combines the expertise of clinical principal investigators with state-of-the-art imaging and data analysis to establish and implement new approaches to the treatment of neurological diseases. In addition, the Neurological Institute trains clinical fellows, full-time research fellows and residents as next generation clinical research scientists.
Clinical trials and research are the key to advancing medical knowledge and patient care. They provide hope by testing new drugs, new surgical techniques or other treatments before they are available.

For outpatient consults:
- Please call 216.445.8455. An intake coordinator will handle your call directly. If you are unable to reach an intake coordinator, please leave a message and they will return your call within the work day (if left before 1 p.m. ET) or the next work day (if left after 1 p.m. ET).
- To refer a patient to the Neurological Institute via fax, please download and complete our physician referral form and fax to 216.636.2596.
