Diabetes & Cardiovascular Disease

Diabetes mellitus is a condition in which the pancreas either cannot produce or adequately utilize insulin, the hormone that breaks down digested sugars.

Diabetes may be:

  • Type 1: also known as insulin dependent or juvenile diabetes
  • Type 2: also known as adult onset diabetes

Another condition, called impaired glucose tolerance, causes the body to produce large amounts of insulin to maintain glucose balance.

Diabetes and impaired glucose tolerance are risk factors for coronary artery disease and other diseases of the blood vessels.

Cleveland Clinic's Health Information Center has many handouts on Diabetes care and management.

The Section of Preventive Cardiology and Rehabilitation works with patients who have diabetes and cardiovascular disease, or those who are at risk for developing cardiovascular disease to manage this cardiovascular risk factor.

To make an appointment with Preventive Cardiology to evaluate your risk factors and to meet with a Preventive Cardiology endocrinologist, call 216.444.9353 or 800.223.2273 ext. 9353
