Our team is focused on helping our patients alleviate pain, increase mobility and improve their quality of life. We recognize that life is a sport and we offer innovative and effective solutions to help get our patients back into the action as soon as possible. An emerging and promising area in sports medicine is the use of biologic agents via an injection to treat inflamed and injured joints. This is referred to as orthobiologics.

Your sports medicine physician or orthopaedic surgeon will determine if orthobiologic therapy (platelet-rich plasma) is right for you. This treatment may be combined with other injectable therapies, such as steroids or hyaluronic acid.

Injections may treat the following conditions:

  • Osteoarthritis (knees and shoulders).
  • Plantar fasciitis.
  • Tendonitis.
  • Wrist and joint pain.
  • Tennis or golf elbow.
  • Rotator cuff tears.
  • Bursitis.
  • Muscle and tendon injuries such as calf and hamstrings.

What are the potential benefits of these injections?

  • Improve symptoms.
  • Regain function after injury.
  • Eliminate the need for more aggressive treatments such as long-term medication or surgery.

Are you covered?

Physician consultations are covered by OHIP. During the consultation, you will discuss if you are good candidate for injections. Biologic therapy is not currently reimbursed by provincial health plans.
