This 16-week program is based on the latest medical research. It’s designed for patients with an HbA1C result greater than 5.9% who want to reduce their risk of diabetes or manage their reliance on medication.

How it works

Our program relies on exercise as a tool to effectively manage blood sugar levels.

Resistance training is a type of exercise that involves muscles working against a force, such as weights, bands or body weight. Research shows that this type of training is an effective way to manage blood sugar levels and health-related risks associated with Type 2 diabetes.

Through exercise, our muscles metabolize glucose, effectively absorbing sugars from our bloodstream and using them as fuel. The more muscle we have, the more effective our bodies are at maintaining healthy blood sugar levels. By maximizing the benefits of resistance training, we can reduce the health-related risks associated with Type 2 diabetes, such as cardiovascular disease, stroke and cognitive decline.

Why choose our diabetes program?

  • Customized care: Our clinicians will work with you to design a resistance training program based on your unique risk factors, your lifestyle and the equipment you have available at home or at your gym.
  • Evidence-based: One measurement of blood sugar is HbA1c, which represents your average blood sugar over three months. Most studies on exercise and blood sugar take place over 12-16 weeks to measure the effect on HbA1c. Our program is 16 weeks long to support your goal of lowering blood sugar.
  • Ongoing support: The program includes an exercise prescription, monitoring and eight 30-minute in-person or virtual sessions with a movement and performance specialist. Individuals can choose to add sessions or train independently during the program.
  • Multidisciplinary approach: Our clinical team may also recommend additional services, like consultations with a registered dietitian from our nutrition team to customize a nutrition plan, or a mental health specialist at our clinic to support stress management and sleep concerns.
