Often, patients who have certain medical conditions, like diabetes, trauma or autoimmune disorders, such as rheumatoid arthritis or lupus, require specialized help in healing. We work on treating the wound, but we also pay special attention to the cause and work with the patient to prevent future healing problems. This includes setting up consultations with physical and occupational therapists, pain management specialists, diabetes educators, pedorthists, orthotists, dietitians, behavioral health professionals, home health nurses and more. Through this comprehensive team, patients and their families can learn more about caring for the wound at home, how they can help, and also get support in coping with issues of wound management, like chronic illness and special care needs.
Our staff includes physicians across several specialties, including orthopedic surgery, plastic surgery, podiatry, vascular surgery, dermatology, undersea and hyperbaric medicine, family medicine, internal medicine and infectious disease, as well as advance practice nurses and certified wound and ostomy nurses.
Patients can refer themselves to Cleveland Clinic Akron General's Wound Healing and Limb Preservation Center, but are usually referred by their physician. Talk to your physician about treatment options that are right for you and about choosing a wound center.
