Adult Epilepsy: Seizure Severity

Seizure Severity in Medically and Surgically Treated Adult Epilepsy Patients

2007 – 2023

The effect of medical treatment on seizure severity was assessed using the Liverpool Seizure Severity Scale (LSSS), a validated patient-completed questionnaire developed to quantify seizure severity.

Medically Treated

Of the 3075 patients who filled out LSSS in 2023 and had a comparator LSSS filled out between 2007 and 2023, 34.6% improved, 41.3% remained stable, and 24.1% had a worsening in seizure severity. Clinically meaningful change was defined as a total point change of ≥ 5.¹

Surgically Treated

Of the 659 patients seen from 2007 through 2023, 70% improved, 16.5% remained stable, and 13.5% had a worsening in seizure severity from pre- to post-surgery. Clinically meaningful change was defined as a total point change of ≥ 5.¹
