Epilepsy Surgery Outcomes (N = 2624)

1991 – 2021

A total of 2624 individuals (pediatric and adult) underwent epilepsy surgery between 1991 and 2021. The proportion of seizure-free patients (defined as Engel I outcome) at 10 years follow-up was 47.5% (standard error ± 1.38%).

Epilepsy Surgery Outcomes by Age Group

1991 –2021

A total of 1730 adults (≥ 18 years of age) underwent epilepsy surgery between 1991 and 2021. The proportion of seizure-free patients (defined as Engel I outcome) at 10 years follow-up was 50% (standard error ± 1.63%).

A total of 894 pediatric patients (< 18 years of age) underwent epilepsy surgery between 1991 and 2021. The proportion of seizure-free patients (defined as Engel I outcome) at 10 years follow-up was 42.1% (standard error ± 2.57%).

Temporal Lobe Epilepsy Surgery Outcomes Based on the Presence of Lesion on MRI

1991 – 2021

Among a total of 662 temporal lobe surgeries between 1991 and 2021, 531 had a lesion identified on the presurgical MRI. The proportion of seizure-free patients (defined as Engel I outcome) at 10 years follow-up in this group was 54.5% (standard error ± 3.09%).

A total of 131 patients with temporal lobe surgery did not have a lesion on the presurgical MRI. The proportion of seizure-free patients (defined as Engel I outcome) at 10 years follow-up in this group was 39.1% (standard error ± 6.75%).

Extra-temporal Lobe Epilepsy Surgery Outcomes Based on the Presence of Lesion on MRI

1991 –2021

Among a total of 463 extra-temporal lobe surgeries between 1991 and 2021, 366 had a lesion identified on the presurgical MRI. The proportion of seizure-free patients (defined as Engel I outcome) at 10 years follow-up in this group was 39.4% (standard error ± 3.99%).

A total of 97 patients with extra-temporal lobe surgery did not have a lesion on the presurgical MRI. The proportion of seizure-free patients (defined as Engel I outcome) at 10 years follow-up in this group was 42.4% (standard error ± 5.94%).
