Pericarditis is an inflammation of the pericardium. Most cases of pericarditis occur in men ages 20 to 50, but it also can occur in women. It usually develops suddenly and may last up to several months. Sometimes excess fluid develops in the space between the pericardial layers and causes a buildup of excess fluid around the heart. If left untreated, it can be life-threatening.
