Causes & Risks of Coronary Artery Disease

Development of Coronary Artery Disease

The narrowing or blockage of arteries that flow blood to the heart can occur over time. In teen years, blood vessel walls show streaks of fat. As we age, fat builds up and forms plaque. Eventually, clotting can occur. This can block blood flow to the heart, causing chest pain (angina) and possible heart attack.

Risk Factors for Coronary Artery Disease

Lifestyle changes like proper nutrition, adequate exercise and managing stress can reduce your risk of heart disease. Non-modifiable risk factors include increasing age, gender, family history or race. The more risk factors you have, the greater the chance of developing cardiovascular disease.
