Cleveland Clinic Sleep App

An Efficient Digitally Integrated Approach for Sleep Disorder Screening (N = 965)

2020 – 2021

OSA = obstructive sleep apnea

To facilitate the screening and diagnosis of common sleep disorders, the Cleveland Clinic sleep app, SLEEP by Cleveland Clinic, which is a free smartphone application that estimates the risk of 4 of the most common disorders affecting sleep in adults, was developed. These 4 sleep disorders consist of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), insomnia, shift work sleep disorder, and insufficient sleep. The sleep app allows for the ability to assess sleep disorder risk and provides education on strategies to optimize sleep and to gain access to sleep specialist experts. A survey was conducted to assess risk and severity of these common sleep disorders. The Neurological Institute tracked 965 unique users, identifying a high prevalence of OSA risk (approximately 75%), insomnia prevalence of close to 80%, and of those who work nontraditional schedules, the prevalence of shift work sleep disorder was more than 50%. Screening via the sleep app is currently being integrated into clinical workflows at Cleveland Clinic.
