The specialty of cardiothoracic anesthesiology was established at Cleveland Clinic, and Cleveland Clinic's Department of Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology maintains a long history of excellence in patient care. Every year, the department provides anesthesia for more than 4,000 cardiac, 1,500 thoracic, and over 1,000 complex vascular surgical cases. This care is a comprehensive perioperative experience beginning in the preoperative clinic and extending to the postoperative cardiovascular intensive care units.

Program Overview
The Adult Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology Fellowship program at Cleveland Clinic began in 1976 and today is the largest with 16 fellows per year. Consistently competitive candidates from residency programs across the U.S. apply, interview and match with our program. Cleveland Clinic is recognized in the U.S. and throughout the world for its expertise and care. Its heart center is also nationally ranked and recognized as the global leader in cardiovascular care.
- Fellows participate in a large variety of complex, high acuity cases
- Faculty are dedicated to educating and mentoring the next generation of cardiothoracic anesthesiologists
- Fellows at the end of fellowship demonstrate proficiency at perioperative management and echocardiography of cardiothoracic surgical patients along with developing their personal professional interest including leadership, research and educational and are prepared to enter the next phase.
