The specialty of cardiothoracic anesthesiology was established at Cleveland Clinic, and Cleveland Clinic's Department of Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology maintains a long history of excellence in patient care. Every year, the department provides anesthesia for more than 4,000 cardiac, 1,500 thoracic, and over 1,000 complex vascular surgical cases. This care is a comprehensive perioperative experience beginning in the preoperative clinic and extending to the postoperative cardiovascular intensive care units.

Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology Fellowship

Program Overview

Cardiothoracic anesthesia offers one of the most interesting and challenging careers in anesthesiology. As a cardiothoracic anesthesiology fellow, you will be exposed to the most advanced management of adult and congenital heart disease. The specialty of cardiothoracic anesthesia was founded at Cleveland Clinic, and we continue to lead the field.

Sixteen one-year fellowships are offered per year.

Areas of concentration include:

  • Revascularization procedures
  • Valve repair
  • Complex Aortic Surgery
  • Advance Transesophageal Echocardiography Training
  • Percutaneous Valve Replacement
  • Complicated Redo cardiac surgeries
  • Perioperative Care of Cardiac, Thoracic, and Vascular surgical patients

Applicants need to have completed a 4 year ACGME-Accredited anesthesiology residency and be board eligible or certified in anesthesiology.
