Sleep Disorders

Insomnia

People with insomnia may have trouble falling asleep or wake up frequently during the night or early morning. Insomnia becomes a problem when it affects your everyday activities. Possible causes of insomnia include stress, anxiety, depression and disorders of the body’s internal clock.

Snoring

Snoring is the noise produced when the air you inhale rattles over the relaxed tissues of the throat. It can be a problem because of the noise it causes and oxygenation concerns.

Sleep Apnea

When the upper airway becomes partially or completely blocked, regular breathing becomes interrupted for short periods of time. Sleep apnea can cause severe sleepiness, and evidence shows that if left untreated, it may be associated with high blood pressure and risk for stroke and heart attack.

Narcolepsy

Narcolepsy is a brain disorder that causes excessive daytime sleepiness. Though dramatic and uncontrolled, “sleep attacks” have been the famous feature of narcolepsy. In reality, however, many patients do not have sleep attacks; instead, they experience constant sleepiness in their everyday lives. Individuals who need to take naps every day may have narcolepsy.

Restless Leg Syndrome

This common disorder is characterized by uncomfortable sensations in the legs which are often described as pulling, crawling, tingling, prickly and sometimes painful. The sensations are associated with an urge to move the legs which may give temporary relief. Most patients report periodic leg jerks which cause repeated awakening and disrupted sleep.

Shift Work & Jet Lag

Some people cannot fall asleep early enough to be able to get up in time for school or work. Shift workers and people who frequently travel by air experience disruptions in the sleep/wake cycle that produces excessive fatigue and sleepiness. Various treatments are available that will reset the “internal clock” so these individuals can attain adequate rest.
