Overview

Overview

How well the hands, wrists, arms and shoulders interact depends upon the integrity and function of the related ligaments, tendons, muscles, joints and bones. Problems in any of these can affect upper extremity function causing major disruptions to the quality of life.

Whether your condition is due to arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, a sports injury, an accident, a work-related injury or a congenital disorder, you can feel confident choosing the Cleveland Clinic specialists for your care.

Hand & Wrist Pain

We rely heavily on our hands which are made up of 27 bones, eight in the wrist, five in the palm and 14 that make up the fingers and thumb. Hands are held together by ligaments, muscles and tendons that connect to the forearm. When hand and wrist pain becomes disabling, it’s time to seek medical advice. Elbow Pain

Elbow pain can be due to aging, overuse, trauma or a sports injury. The elbow is a hinge joint between the forearm and the upper arm and are held together by ligaments. Because of the complexity of the muscles, tendons, bones, cartilage and lubricants within the elbow, medical attention is advised when there is elbow pain. Shoulder Pain

Shoulder pain and shoulder problems have become very common. Rotator cuff tears, arthritis, fractures, bursitis, frozen shoulder, acute dislocations are among the common conditions that create shoulder pain or limited mobility of the shoulder. This is when you should seek medical attention.

Many hand, wrist, elbow and shoulder problems do not require surgery and may be treated with non-operative approaches like using a brace, physical therapy or an exercise program. When surgery is necessary, our surgeons treat from the simple to the most complex cases including arthroscopic surgery, laser surgery, total joint replacements and more.
