Overview

Overview

Fairview Hospital offers a wide range of surgical services, including cardiothoracic surgery, vascular surgery, urology, colorectal, orthopaedics, general surgery, bariatric surgery, breast surgery and surgery as a treatment for cancer.

Fairview Hospital also offers minimally invasive surgery, which can allow patients to return to their lives faster through quicker recovery, less pain and small incisions. Minimally invasive options include single-port surgery and robotic surgery.

Minimally Invasive Surgery

Minimally Invasive Surgery

Since performing our first laparoscopic surgery in 1989, Fairview has become a leader in minimally invasive surgery. Fairview's Minimally Invasive Surgery Center is well-equipped with the latest instrumentation, enabling our surgeons to perform the most sophisticated minimally invasive surgeries.

What is minimally invasive surgery?

By using a long, thin surgical instrument with a tiny video camera attached to it, surgeons are able to enter the body through a series of tiny incisions (5 to 10 millimeters) to view and explore the body and perform the operation with minimal tissue damage.

Why consider minimally invasive surgery?

Because minimally invasive surgical procedures cause minimal tissue, skin and muscle damage, recovery time is reduced and the patient can return to normal activity more quickly.

Benefits include:

  • Smaller incisions.
  • Less blood, less scarring.
  • Less pain during recovery.
  • Some procedures are performed on an outpatient basis.
  • Faster recovery.
  • Shorter hospital stays.
  • Better clinical outcomes.
  • Fewer complications.

More surgical options

Currently surgeons in the following specialties are performing minimally invasive surgery at Fairview Hospital.

  • Colorectal surgery.
  • General surgery.
  • Gynecology.
  • Orthopedics.
  • Plastic surgery.
  • Thoracic surgery.
  • Urology.
  • Vascular surgery.

Why Choose Cleveland Clinic Fairview Hospital?

One of the largest and most experienced hospitals on Cleveland's West Side, Fairview Hospital's surgical program is founded on advanced technology and surgical firsts.

  • Fairview Hospital established one of the nation’s first coronary care units over 35 years ago and performed the first laparoscopic surgery on Cleveland’s West Side.
  • Every year, physicians at Fairview Hospital perform over 19,000 surgeries, and almost two-thirds of these procedures are outpatient surgeries.

Robotic Surgery

Robotic Surgery

Highly beneficial to patients, robotic surgery allows skilled surgeons to perform complex medical procedures with great precision using just a minimally invasive approach. Robotic surgery is a leading alternative to "open" surgery and laparoscopy because patients are able to return to their life faster with less pain and shorter hospital stays.

How does robotic surgery work?

Robotic surgery is performed through a few small incisions in the body and is one of the most accurate and advanced ways to carry out surgical procedures. The “arm and wrist” of the robotic unit mimic the surgeon’s movements while the surgeon’s hands control the movement and placement of those instruments. The Robotic Surgery System also enables highly magnified visualization inside the body (3D image) as well as enhanced dexterity, providing greater precision and maneuverability during the operation.

How is robotic surgery used?

Robotic technology is available at Fairview Hospital for a range of minimally invasive procedures, including the treatment of thoracic, urological and gynecological conditions, as well as cancer.

Patient benefits include, but are not limited to:

  • Significantly less pain.
  • Reduced risk of infection.
  • Faster return to normal activities.
  • Shorter hospital stay and recovery time.
  • In many cases, better clinical outcomes.
  • Less scarring and smaller incisions.
  • Less blood loss and need for blood transfusion.

Why choose robotic surgery at Fairview Hospital?

Even the most advanced robotic surgery technology doesn’t work on its own. The equally advanced clinical expertise at Fairview Hospital is what puts patients in the best hands, supported by the best medical technology.
