Virtual Visit: Shared Medical Appointments

This program has been designed specifically for women who require weight management for the prevention and/or reversal of weight-related disease states.

An advocate for prevention and wellness, Karen Cooper, DO, director of obesity management for the Women’s Health Institute, offers patients the option of going through the program using virtual shared medical appointments or going through the program using more traditional in-office visits.

New! Weight Management Program: Virtual Shared Medical Appointments (SMAs)

We now offer the option to participate in the Weight Management Program’s shared medical appointments as “virtual” appointments. Participants in this option must meet the same criteria  as those in the traditional in-office program.

The virtual SMA program offers monitoring and accountability to patients, with the convenience of virtual online visits. The first visit is in person, where patients meet the physician, program nurse and other participants. They also learn more about the program, the diet they will follow, set goals and document their current weight. The program runs for six consecutive weeks, followed by a separate maintenance program.

After the first visit, subsequent appointments occur live online with patients using Cleveland Clinic’s Express Care Online app on their smartphone, tablet, laptop or desktop computer. During the online visits, participants are able to see and hear each other as well as the physician. As part of their virtual appointment, each participant is encouraged to report their weight to the group, share challenges and offer success tips.

The weight management program uses a protein-based diet, in combination with appropriate exercise and vitamin supplements. Results of the program include not only weight loss, but also positive change in the areas of high blood pressure, diabetes and cholesterol, among others.
