Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) Screening

(Also Called 'Prostate-Specific Antigen Screening (Psa)', 'PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen ) Screening')

PSA is a substance produced by the prostate gland. The screening test measures the amount of this substance in the bloodstream. Elevated PSA levels might indicate prostate cancer as well as other non-cancerous conditions (prostatitis, BPH).

It is important to understand that the PSA test is not perfect. Many healthy men have elevated PSA levels. Conversely, low levels of PSA in the bloodstream do not rule out the possibility of cancer. However, many cases of early prostate cancer are found by a PSA blood test.

How is the PSA screening test administered?

The PSA test involves drawing blood from the arm. The results are usually sent to a laboratory and most often come back within several days.

When should I have my PSA levels tested?

PSA tests and digital rectal exams should be offered every year to all men beginning at age 50. African-American men, as well as men with a family history of prostate cancer, should have PSA tests and digital rectal exams annually beginning at age 45.

If your doctor is concerned that you might have prostate cancer based on either your PSA level or a rectal exam, a biopsy (lab testing of a small amount of tissue from the prostate) will be performed. This is the only way to positively identify the presence of cancer.
