Pulmonary fibrosis

In pulmonary fibrosis, scar tissue develops in the lungs. The condition is often referred to as idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), because the exact cause is unknown.

People with pulmonary fibrosis cough and have difficulty breathing with mild exertion. Insufficient oxygen in the blood may cause the skin to turn slightly blue, and the person may develop emphysema, heart problems or infections.

How is pulmonary fibrosis treated?

Many patients do not respond well to available treatments. Lung transplantation may be an appropriate option for some patients. Cleveland Clinic physicians are evaluating new treatment approaches for IPF in clinical trials.

Or call 216.444.6503 or 800.223.2273 Ext. 46503 to schedule an appointment with a Cleveland Clinic pulmonary physician.
