Genitourinary Reconstruction

Trends in genitourinary reconstruction

Reconstructive urologists continue to perform a high volume of open abdominal and pelvic surgical procedures for reconstruction of the lower urinary tract for a variety of congenital and acquired conditions. This includes cystectomy with urinary diversion, bladder augmentation, continent catheterizable channels, and fistula repairs. Forty procedures were done in both 2021 and 2022. This increased to sixty procedures in 2023, a 50% increase. This extensive experience in reoperative open abdominal and pelvic reconstruction continues to foster a local, regional, and national referral base for difficult urological problems, and provides valuable training for residents and fellows as a high percentage of oncologic operations in the department are now being done robotically.
