Overview

Overview

The goal of this conference is to disseminate research findings and evidence-based information to clinicians who will use the new knowledge to (a) replicate studies, (b) translate findings to improve patient care quality, safety and outcomes, and (c) improve evidence-based infrastructure and processes. This conference focuses on research and dissemination and implementation of research findings by building a capacity for scientific inquiry among attendees. It will feature presentations by and for clinical and academic attendees, with time allotted between sessions for formal and informal networking. To enhance knowledge related to methodological issues, the conference will feature six workshops, two of which will be presented by content experts (statisticians, editors, writers and researchers).

Conference Objectives

The objectives of this conference are to

  • Provide a forum for research collaboration and partnerships between nurses at various institutions (clinical and academic).
  • Share results of clinical research studies that will foster a culture of inquiry that will lead to implementation science and foster delivery of care based on best-practice evidence.
  • Increase knowledge of methodological concerns related to research planning and implementation through expert-led methodology workshops.
  • Enhance attendee’s knowledge of research processes and clinical research through discussion, networking and expert-led workshops.

Keynote Speakers

Melissa Batchelor

Melissa Batchelor, PhD, RN-BC, FNP-BC, FGSA, FAAN
Director, Center for Aging, Health and Humanities
George Washington University School of Nursing
Washington, DC

Melissa Batchelor, PhD, RN-BC, FNP-BC, FGSA, FAAN, is a tenured associate professor of nursing and geriatric nursing researcher. Her clinical expertise is in geriatrics and long-term care, with a particular focus on caring for older adults with Alzheimer’s disease. During her 26-year career, she has worked as an administrative registered nurse (RN) in skilled nursing facilities, practiced as a family nurse practitioner (FNP) across long-term care settings, taught undergraduate and graduate students in aging, and conducted Alzheimer’s research. She is board-certified as a gerontological RN and FNP.

Dr. Batchelor’s program of research focuses on improving nutritional outcomes for older adults with dementia by teaching caregivers to use different handfeeding techniques to increase meal intake (MelissaBPhD.com/NOSH). Her research has been supported by the John A. Hartford Foundation, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Nurse Faculty Scholars program, and the National Institute of Health / National Institute for Nursing Research. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing (FAAN) and the Gerontological Society of America (FGSA). In 2017-2018, she was a Health and Aging Policy Fellow and served the United States Senate Special Committee on Aging in the office of Senator Susan Collins (R-ME).

In March of 2020, she started a podcast called This is Getting Old: Moving Towards an Age-Friendly World (TiGO). While episodes focus on issues related to aging, the emphasis is raising awareness of policies and programs that are not in place to deal effectively with an aging global population - THAT's what's really "getting old." Her YouTube Channel has over 25K subscribers and nearly 3M views.

Additionally, Dr. Batchelor is the co-author of a book — #Socia/Media in #Healthcare: A Guide to Creating Your Professional Digital Presence — published by SLACK Incorporated, LLC, in August 2022. In it, she shares her journey and experiences in learning how to use digital technology effectively to reach beyond traditional dissemination venues for her research, teaching strategies and health policy.
