By researching at-risk normal individuals over the course of 20 years, we will learn what is happening to the brain and body before a neurological disease is diagnosed. How Does the Cleveland Clinic Brain Study Work?
The goal of Cleveland Clinic's Brain Study is to prevent – and cure – neurological disease by identifying at-risk individuals at the point when changes in the body and brain begin to occur. The study will collect data from up to 200,000 neurologically healthy participants yearly for up to 20 years. That data will help uncover the pre-symptomatic causes of neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, stroke and epilepsy, and identify targets for preventing and curing these diseases.

Who Is Eligible To Participate?
Adults age 50+ with no known neurological disorder or neurologically healthy adults age 20+ who have a first degree relative (i.e., parent or sibling) diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.
What Is Required of Participants?
Cleveland Clinic Brain Study participants will undergo serial assessments in Cleveland, Ohio at Cleveland Clinic’s main campus. Assessments may include:
- Neurological exam and quantitative test of neurological performance.
- Neuropsychological testing.
- Quality of life questionnaires.
- Blood and stool sampling.
- Echocardiogram (Echo).
- Electroencephalogram (EEG).
- Electrocardiogram (EKG).
- MRI scans of the brain.
- Optical coherence tomography (OCT).
- Polysomnogram (sleep study).
Financial stipends will be awarded to participants as various requirements of the study are completed.
