Chronic pain and complex painful neurological disorders affect millions of Americans, many of whom have tried multiple treatments without relief. Pain can interfere with a person’s ability to work, participate in social and recreational activities, and may affect relationships with family or friends. Over time people may restrict their activities, which in turn causes them to become less physically fit to the point that even minor activities increase pain and fatigue.
Research over the last 40 years has shown that acute pain associated with injury, illness or surgery is mostly due to changes in injured tissues. Chronic pain, in contrast, is mostly due to changes in the central nervous system. These changes increase its sensitivity to the point that even harmless stimulation and activity may be painful. While the pain that people experience is mostly a result of these neurological changes, the changes in function and quality of life are more determined by factors such as general health, physical conditioning, psychological impact, environmental changes, and social factors. The same is true of overall suffering.
The Center for Comprehensive Pain Recovery was formed with the over-arching goal of providing the most effective treatment and evaluation for individuals with chronic pain based on a “whole-person” model of care. The foundation of our approach lies in attention to the neurological/biological, psychological and social factors that impact pain. We believe that individuals with chronic pain have unique and complex needs that require a specialized multidisciplinary approach. The CCPR team works together to provide this comprehensive approach to care in a centralized service.
What We Treat
The Center for Comprehensive Pain Recovery serves patients with treatments across the persistent pain continuum, from early intervention to manage pain and reduce the risk of it becoming chronic, to interdisciplinary rehabilitation for the most complex, treatment-resistant chronic pain.
In addition to providing comprehensive outpatient services including medication and behavioral management strategies to help patients manage their chronic pain, the Center for Comprehensive Pain Recovery offers several specialized programs. These include a perioperative spine optimization clinic; Back on TREK, an innovative population health program to manage back pain; and, for patients with more persistent pain, the Chronic Pain Neurorehabilitation Program, which is a more intensive outpatient treatment program (IOP).
Use our Meditation Audio tools to help manage your chronic pain.
The center is supported by specially-trained pain physicians, advanced nurse practitioners, clinical psychologists, behavioral health pain specialists, physical/occupational therapists, and administrators.
