A colonoscopy is an outpatient procedure in which the inside of the large intestine (colon and rectum) is examined. A screening colonoscopy is recommended for anyone 50 years of age and older; or age 45 if you are African American, as this group it at a higher risk than whites, Hispanics and other ethnic groups.

Talk to your doctor about earlier screening if you have a family history of colorectal cancer or polyps or if you are experiencing any symptoms, such as bleeding or change in bowel habits.
