A colonoscopy is the only screening that can prevent cancer. Colonoscopy is a painless, outpatient procedure. If polyps are found during the procedure, they can often be removed the same day. The removal of polyps before they turn cancerous can prevent cancer from forming. A screening colonoscopy is recommended for anyone 45 years of age and older.

Talk to your doctor about earlier screening if you have a family history of colorectal cancer or polyps or if you are experiencing any symptoms, such as bleeding or change in bowel habits.
