The more you weigh, the harder your heart must work to carry and nourish the excess weight. Food provides the fuel (calories) your body needs for nourishment and the energy you need to function. If you eat more calories than your body needs, the excess is stored mainly as fat. Even if you take in just a few too many calories, this can lead to a gradual increase in weight over time. To lose weight, you need to take in fewer calories than you use.
