How do Virtual Second Opinions by Cleveland Clinic Work?
1. Registration and live intake visit with a nurse care manager:
A dedicated Nurse Care Manager welcomes your patient via a live video intake, and initiates their case.
2. Records collection and expedited matching:
We do all the work of acquiring pertinent medical records and imaging and then matching your patient with a Cleveland Clinic expert physician specialized in their condition in just a few days.
3. Expert second opinion:
Following an optional virtual visit with the Cleveland Clinic physician (video not available in all locations), your patient’s second opinion will be delivered via a written report.
Choose What’s Right for You
When you receive your VSO it’ll be in a written report outlining your expert provider’s recommendations. Depending on your location, you may have the option to include a virtual visit (video or phone) with the Cleveland Clinic provider to review those recommendations.

When could you suggest a second opinion to a patient?
If your patient faces significant procedures that are invasive, costly, or involve a lot of downtime for rehab. When your patient presents with rare symptoms, imaging, and/or pathology that makes a clear diagnosis hard to render When you want a second set of eyes on a treatment plan.
Does insurance cover the cost of a VSO?
No. Our team cannot file a claim with the patient’s insurance carrier or provide a procedure (CPT) code for our service.
However, if your patient’s employer offers this service as part of their benefits package, the service may be of no or lower cost to them. Encourage your patient to check with their employer.
Patients may also be able to pay with a Flexible Spending Account (FSA) or Health Savings Account (HSA). Patients are responsible for determining if this service is a Qualified Expenditure and any taxes, penalties, fines, or surcharges according to applicable federal and state law for utilizing it for a Non-Qualified Expenditure.
How long does it take?
We typically deliver second opinions in just a few days once records are collected. Depending on individual situations, record collection may take some time, and in that case, the entire second opinion service takes about two weeks.
