About Us

About Us

Akron General sponsors four positions for a one-year residency in Preliminary Medicine. This residency is for students whose career specialty requires one year of fundamental clinical experience, or for students who desire a broad-based clinical education prior to selecting a complete residency program.

Students spend nine months in the Department of Medicine on core rotations followed by three months of electives. Residents who decide to continue in Internal Medicine can then advance to a second-year position.

Welcome

Welcome

A Letter from the Director of the Internal Medicine Residency Program

Thank you for your interest in the Preliminary Medicine Residency Program at Cleveland Clinic Akron General. We offer four Preliminary Medicine positions to students who are looking for a strong clinical year. This may serve as a foundation as you enter other fields such as Anesthesiology, Radiology, Ophthalmology, or as a preparatory year as you assess your career options.

The Preliminary Medicine schedule resembles the Categorical Internal Medicine first year with a few exceptions. First, Preliminary Medicine residents are given up to three months of elective time that may be taken outside the Department of Medicine. This gives the Preliminary Medicine resident the opportunity to rotate in specific disciplines they may be considering for future training. Secondly, Preliminary Medicine residents are given the option to participate in the continuity care clinic. However, if you have not secured a position in a subsequent training program you will be scheduled to participate in the continuity clinic. Should you participate in the continuity care clinic, you would carry a panel of your own patients for an outpatient experience.

I encourage you to seriously consider spending a year with us in the Preliminary Medicine Program. We will work with you to make sure the year meets your needs and prepares you for your future career.

Sincerely,

Joseph A. Finocchio, MD
Program Director
