Conference objectives:

  • Recognize the acute issues and complications specific to AML and other blood cancers during the inpatient treatment period.
  • Understand the specific concerns facing the patient with AML while inpatient and identify nursing interventions that can assist blood cancer patients.
  • Identify members of the Hematology-Oncology team and how they approach care-planning for patients with AML and other blood cancers.
  • Comprehend Research Trials available for AML and other blood cancers and how to access current trials to assist patients.
  • Obtain a perspective on the financial disparities facing patients dealing with a blood cancer diagnosis and identify resources and support staff who can assist in resolving financial concerns.
  • Review nutritional considerations for immunosuppressed patients and examine common diet and drug interactions used to treat hematological malignancies
  • Recognize trends in palliative and end of life care for patients with blood cancers specifically interventions that provide support including transfusions, parecentesis and palliative chemotherapy and radiation
  • Identify cancer patients who would benefit from creative art and music therapy in the inpatient setting to decrease isolation and improve coping skills.
