Cleveland Clinic surgeons perform lung transplant procedures for patients with a variety of lung disease. In 2017, they performed 124 lung transplants. A little more than half of these patients (51.6%) had idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.

Lung Transplant 1-Month and 1-Year Survival

The 1-month rates of graft survival and patient survival at Cleveland Clinic were about as expected. The 1-year rates of graft and patient survival at Cleveland Clinic were better than expected.

Wait Time for Lung Transplant

January 2012 – June 2017

The wait time for a lung transplant at Cleveland Clinic was 4.1 months in 2017. This is slightly higher than the average 3.6-month wait time at other centers in the region and throughout the US. Most patients at receive a transplant very quickly, but many Cleveland Clinic patients have conditions that make it difficult to find suitable organs, thereby increasing the median wait time.

Lung Transplant Wait-List Mortality Rate

Cleveland Clinic strives to offer life-saving lung transplantation to as many patients as possible, and to achieve the best outcomes possible for patients waiting for the procedure. Because of an aggressive posture toward evaluating and listing extremely sick and high-risk candidates on the wait list, Cleveland Clinic’s wait-list mortality rate in 2017 was higher than the national average.
