Valve Surgery: Total Volume
2016 – 2021
Cleveland Clinic is the highest-volume heart valve surgery hospital in the country, and the outcomes are among the best in the world. Cleveland Clinic valve surgeons provide comprehensive treatment for patients with all types of valve disease. In 2021, Cleveland Clinic surgeons performed 3459 valve surgeries.

Valve Surgery: Primary Operation and Reoperation Volume
2021, N = 3459
In 2021, Cleveland Clinic surgeons performed 3459 valve operations; 2580 of these were primary (first-time) procedures and 879 were reoperations.

Valve Surgery: In-Hospital Mortality
2021, N = 3459
Patients who have valve surgery reoperations have a somewhat higher risk of death compared with patients who have a primary operation, due to the overall decrease in health over time. Despite this, the in-hospital mortality rates at Cleveland Clinic were lower than expected in the current reported year for both reoperations and primary procedures. Calculated observed to expected ratios remain less than the value of 1 indicating that Cleveland Clinic mortality is better than expected in these procedures.

Reoperation | 0.9 |

Valve Surgery: In-Hospital Mortality by Procedure Type
2021
Mortality rates for all valve surgery procedures were lower than the expected rates. The mortality rate was 0% in several categories, despite the inclusion of complex operations and reoperations. Calculated observed to expected ratios remain less than the value of 1 indicating that Cleveland Clinic mortality is better than expected in these procedures.
