A brachytherapy program designates the use of radioactive sources within or in contact with the body as opposed to treatment with an external radiation beam (Teletherapy); it is a technically demanding subspecialty within Radiation Oncology requiring special expertise. Cleveland Clinic has one of the most active brachytherapy services in the nation with implants routinely performed for solid tumors at almost any site in the body where brachytherapy can be applied.
A full spectrum of radioactive sources is available for intracavitary brachytherapy endocavitary and interstitial brachytherapy implants used in brachytherapy. Remote afterloading high-dose-rate equipment is often used to permit brachytherapy on an outpatient basis without exposure to family, friends, or hospital personnel. HDR brachytherapy treatments can be completed in a matter of minutes each day.
