Where to Go
Because we want your registration experience to be easy and based on your specific service, please follow the check-in instructions you received when you made your appointment.
Once you arrive, our friendly admitting staff will ask you for, or verify, important information, including your address and insurance information. You can speed up your registration process by pre-registering online.
During Your Stay
Please review your Welcome Packet for details about your stay, including amenities, important phone numbers, safety information and more.
If you didn’t receive a Welcome Packet, please ask your nurse for a copy or download a PDF version.
Akron General is committed to making your transition from hospital to home as easy as possible. You may receive a phone call from us two or three days after your discharge.
If you have questions regarding your going home instructions, problems with medications or unexpected changes, please contact your primary care doctor or specialist. Taking an active role in your care has many benefits and together, we can help you achieve the best possible health.
Your nurse will let you know when you will be discharged and an approximate time. We offer these helpful tips so that you know what to expect and also some questions you might want to ask your care providers before you leave.
Be sure to ask questions about your follow-up care. It may be helpful to have someone, like a relative or friend, stay with you during your discharge to help you remember or write things down and to ask questions you might not thing of.
Make sure you get the results of all tests and procedures. Ask the doctor or nurse when and how you will get them. Don't assume the results are okay. If you don't hear anything, call the doctor and ask questions.
At the time of discharge, your nurse will review written home-going instructions with you. It is very important that you ask any questions you have. You will be asked to sign your discharge instructions and will receive a copy to take home. Be sure you see your physician for follow-up care.
If You Have Been Seen By a Hospitalist
After your discharge, your medical records will be updated and sent to your primary care physician. He or she will also be notified if you need follow-up care. After you leave the hospital, your primary care physician will again be your main care provider, seeing you for follow-up or taking care of medication refills.
You should expect to receive separate statements from your hospital and for services provided by your hospitalist or hospitalist group.

Medications at Discharge
Before you go home from the hospital, these are some things you can do to be sure you know how to take any new medications properly.
- Learn the name of each medication that is prescribed for you, why you are taking it, the dosage and the schedule of how you are to take it.
- Ask if you should avoid any foods, beverages, other medications or activities.
- Review your discharge instruction sheet and question anything that is unclear or confusing.
- Repeat the instructions back to the nurse, doctor or pharmacist. This is a good way to verify that you understand it correctly.
- Read the label, including warnings. Make sure it's the medication your doctor ordered.
- Request any written information available on the medication.
- Some medications react with alcohol. If you drink alcohol, be sure to check with your nurse, doctor or pharmacist whether it is safe to do so.
- Report any reactions, side effects or allergies to your healthcare provider.
- Keep a list of all medications you take and take them with you to your doctor.
- Make sure that each of your doctors is aware of medications that other doctors have prescribed for you.
- Question anything that does not seem right. Be alert to unexpected changes. If you get a prescription refill that seems to have a different strength or appearance, ask questions!
- If you're having problems with a medication, call your doctor.

Picking up a patient
Parking charges are waived for drivers taking a patient home after a hospital stay. If picking up a patient, please park in the visitor parking deck and bring the parking ticket in to be validated. Move your vehicle to the main entrance only when the patient is actually leaving the room. A staff member will escort the patient to the entrance and remain with the patient until you arrive. Ask a parking deck attendant for information about a weekly parking pass.
Please remember that the Ohio Fire Code requires that fire lanes be left open. Cars left unattended in fire lanes around the hospital will be towed at the owner's expense.
