About the Screening

About the Screening

Your pre-employment screening includes a functional assessment, urine drug screening, vision screening, IGRA TB blood test, immunity titers, vaccines if needed, and N95 fit testing if applicable (requires you to be clean-shaven). Please be aware that final screening results vary by individual and may delay your orientation/start date.

Anesthesiology trainee specific requirements

If you are joining the Integrated Hospital Care Institute, you'll need these additional screenings:

  • Pre-hire drug screens.
  • Random toxicology screens after primary hiring.
  • "For cause" drug screens.
  • Return-to-duty testing following a violation of alcohol or controlled substances use policies.

The Integrated Hospital Care Institute is fully committed to patient safety and employee well-being. As part of this commitment, a Substance Abuse Prevention Protocol was established, effective March 1, 2008. The program is designed to increase education on prevention, recognition and risk of substance abuse.

As a condition of employment, all residents and fellows must agree to participate in the Substance Abuse Prevention Protocol and to abide by the terms of the Substance Abuse Policy. If you have any questions, please contact your Integrated Hospital Care Institute training program.

Random drug testing program

Cleveland Clinic is committed to patient safety, caregiver health and a drug-free workplace. As part of our pledge to deliver safe, reliable care, Cleveland Clinic has implemented a random drug testing program effective Jan. 1, 2016. All Cleveland Clinic employees (including physicians and trainees) are subject to the random drug testing program during the duration of their employment.

Trainees will still need to undergo the initial drug screening as part of the pre-screening health exam before beginning training.

Employees are randomly selected by a scientifically valid method, giving everyone an equal chance of being tested each time selections are made. Employees may be selected several times in a row or not selected the entire year.

Here is the procedure for trainees who are randomly selected for testing:

  • Schedules will be reviewed before notifying a trainee to report for testing.
  • Testing will be conducted during the trainee's normal work schedule at or near their work location.
    • Trainees who are unavailable for testing because of an outside rotation or vacation will go back in the pool for re-randomization.
  • Trainees will be notified by text page; they are to respond to the page within one hour.
    • If they do not respond, their Program Coordinator will be contacted for help in locating them.
  • When they respond, a location and time for testing that day will be scheduled.
    • If they do not report for testing at the designated time and place, their Program Director will be notified.
