We welcome international participants who wish to engage in one-on-one clinical and surgical observations, shadow staff involved in departmental administrative functions, and discover best practices and operational strengths of Cleveland Clinic.
Observational opportunities within the Anesthesiology Institute include:
Adult Cardiothoracic Anesthesia and Surgical Intensive Care
Participants will observe all types of simple and complex cardiac, thoracic and vascular procedures and surgeries, including percutaneous transcatheter interventions, lung and heart transplants, and mechanical assist device placements along with hemodynamic and echocardiographic monitoring. Participants will attend patient evaluation and preoperative assessment and teaching conferences, as well as fellows’ and residents’ teaching sessions and transesophageal echocardiography review with staff. Participants will be able to discuss and participate in multidisciplinary perioperative decision making.
General Anesthesia
The program, which is observational in nature, is designed to reveal the best practices followed by our department in providing anesthetic care to a diverse, high acuity patient population and for a broad range of complex surgical procedures. Participants may observe the general anesthetic care of patients undergoing a variety of surgeries, including robotic urologic surgery, neurosurgery, orthopedic surgery, advanced bronchoscopy, bariatric surgery and more. They may also observe our acute pain and regional anesthesia service as well as the surgical intensive care units. Depending on case availability, participants may be exposed to liver, pancreas, kidney and small bowel transplantation cases. With enough advance notice, the program may be tailored to include a more focused experience in a single discipline.
Pain Medicine
Participants will observe the care of patients with complex pain conditions using a comprehensive approach. They will be able to discuss the clinical reasoning of diagnosis and selection of treatment. They will also watch and discuss interventional pain procedures and attend lectures, journal clubs and workshops as available.
Pediatric Anesthesia
Participants will observe a tremendous variety of cases, including congenital cardiac cases, that come through our world-renowned pediatric service.
