Biography

About Venugopal Menon, MD

Venu Menon, MD, FACC, FAHA, is the Section Head of Clinical Cardiology in the Robert and Suzanne Tomisch Department of Cardiovascular Medicine, Sydell and Arnold Miller Family Heart, Vascular & Thoracic Institute. He is also Director of the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit and the Cardiovascular Fellowship Program, and is the Mehdi Razavi Endowed Chair and Professor of Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine.

Education and Training: Dr. Menon earned his medical degree from Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research in Pondicherry, India. He completed an internship in internal medicine at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital in New York, NY, where he received the Chief Resident Award as well as the Michael Rauchman award for best graduating resident. He then completed a fellowship in cardiovascular disease.

Prior to joining Cleveland Clinic, Dr. Menon held academic appointments at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons and University of North Carolina School of Medicine. He was received the Distinguished Faculty Award as Outstanding Teacher of the Year at Columbia University, and was named Educator of the year and inducted into the Alpha omega Alpha Honor Medical Society at University of North Carolina. Dr. Menon has served as Director of the Coronary Care Unit and Director of the Chest Pain Unit at UNC Hospitals, and as Assistant Director of Cardiac research at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center in New York.

Research, Publications and Speaking: After completing a fellowship in cardiovascular disease, Dr. Menon continued his research training as a Clinical Research Fellow on the National Institutes of Health-supported SHOCK trial. He is the Vice Chair of the American Heart Association Acute Cardiac Care and General Cardiology Committee of the Council on Clinical Cardiology.

Dr. Menon has published more than 200 manuscripts in peer-reviewed publications with research interests in cardiac critical care and time-sensitive cardiac emergencies. Dr. Menon also has a leadership position in the Cleveland Clinic Clinical Coordinating Center for Clinical Research (C5 Research) and is involved in the conduct of clinical trials around the world, including chairmanship of the Cardiovascular Events Committee on multiple phase 3 seminal clinical trials. He serves on the American Heart Association committee for Scientific Sessions and is the American College of Cardiology liaison to the American Heart Association’s Emergency Cardiovascular Care Committee.

Dr Menon provided thoughtful and detailed information to me about my status and surgery. I was especially grateful that my wife and daughter were there to hear it. My daughter is a nurse at the Clinic. The doctors information gave both of them relief from their anxiety about my surgery. I have been very comfortable about it and was very pleased they heard the doctors positive review of my status prior to surgery.

This appointment was set up for me by Daniel Oress following my having two spells of irregular heartbeats and going to the emergency room. He also set up some bloodwork, a breathing test, and added Jardiance to my medications. And made the arrangements for this followup meeting with Dr. Menon.

Dr. Menon and his fellow worked together very well, answering my questions about my congestive heart failure and the changes occuring in my kidney function. He ordered a comprehensive metabolic panel to check on those changes.

Dr. Menon's fellow came in before him, examined me, asked some questions and listened to my heart. Then he went to consult with Dr. Menon and they both returned. Dr. Menon examined me, asked some more questions and he listened to my heart. He changed the antibiotic I take before dental work due to my heart valve transplant. He said to return in 6 months to see him and have an echocardiogram.

Dr. Menon, My Cardiologist at Cleveland Clinic is an excellent Doctor and Cardiologist. He listens to every thing you tell him and explains things clearly and in the language that a person can understand. His advice has been excellent for my Blood Pressure and has helped me to significantly lower it. I am so glad that I have been lucky enough to have him as my Cardiologist.

The doctor was excellent! He informed himself about David's health issues before coming into the room. He was very personable and showed deep concern for what David was going through with his approaching surgeries. He spent a good amount of time asking questions, answering questions, and reassuring David about his choice to go forward with the surgeries. Wonderful man and incredible doctor!
