Dean Schraufnagel, MD, is a thoracic surgeon in the Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery Department of the Sydell and Arnold Miller Family Heart, Vascular & Thoracic Institute. He sees patients at main campus.

Experience: In 2019 Cleveland Clinic thoracic surgeons at main campus performed more than 2,000 operations, spanning the complete range of thoracic procedures.
Dr. Schraufnagel performed more than 450 conventional, robotic and minimally invasive surgeries in 2019-2020. During the previous five years of his residency he performed a total of more than 1,500 procedures.

Education: Dr. Schraufnagel earned his medical degree with research honors from Tufts University School of Medicine, Boston. After completing a general surgery internship at George Washington University, Washington, D.C, he was accepted into the first class of the Cleveland Clinic six-year integrated cardiothoracic surgery residency. He served as chief resident in his final year of the program.

Research, Publications and Speaking: Dr. Schraufnagel has coauthored papers and research abstracts published in leading peer-reviewed surgical journals on the latest advances in cardiothoracic surgery and currently is an ad hoc reviewer for the Annals of the American Thoracic Society. Dr. Schraufnagel has made research and case report presentations at national and international medical meetings, including the Society of Thoracic Surgeons and American Association for Thoracic Surgery.
