Treatment Outcomes

To promote quality improvement, Cleveland Clinic has created a series of Outcomes books similar to this one for many of its institutes. Designed for a physician audience, the Outcomes books contain a summary of our surgical and medical trends and approaches, data on patient volumes and outcomes, and a review of new technologies and innovations.

Surgical Overview Outcomes

Surgical Overview

Cleveland Clinic surgeons perform procedures at our main campus and at Cleveland Clinic hospitals throughout greater Cleveland.  In 2012, they performed 11,446 cardiovascular and thoracic surgical procedures.

Coronary Artery Disease Outcomes

Ischemic Heart Disease

Includes cardiac catheterization, interventional procedures, care after myocardial infarction (heart attack), and coronary artery bypass surgery.

Cardiac Rhythm Disorders Outcomes

Cardiac Rhythm Disorders

Includes treatments for patients with trial fibrillation, ventricular tachycardia and device implants.

Heart Valve Disease Outcomes

Heart Valve Disease

Includes valve surgery options such as valve repair, valve replacement, minimally invasive valve treatments, robotically assisted valve surgery and percutaneous valve approaches.

Aortic Disease Outcomes

Aortic Disease

Includes diagnostic and surgical approaches to the entire aorta from the aortic arch to the descending and thoracoabdominal artery.  Outcomes are reported for traditional open surgery, minimally invasive surgery and endovascular repair, as well as complex hybrid approaches.

Hypertrophic Obstructive Cardiomyopathy Outcomes

Hypertrophic Obstructive Cardiomyopathy

Includes septal myectomy, including procedures performed in conjunction with a valve procedure.

Congenital Heart Disease Outcomes

Congenital Heart Disease

Includes interventional procedures, percutaneous closure procedures and surgery.

Pericardial Disease Outcomes

Pericardial Disease

Pericardial disease includes a group of conditions that affect the pericardium, the double-layered sac that surrounds the heart.

Heart Failure and Transplant Outcomes

Heart Failure and Transplant

Includes survival, wait time, transplant rate among patients on the wait list, mechanical circulatory support (MCS) devices (including strategies, survival to transplant, and survival after MCS device implant), heart failure care performance and mortality.

Lung and Heart - Lung Transplant Outcomes

Lung and Heart - Lung Transplant

Lung and heart-lung transplant outcomes include data on the number of transplants, primary disease of transplant recipients, survival, wait time and wait list mortality.

Peripheral Vascular Disease Outcomes

Peripheral Vascular Disease

Includes interventional and diagnostic procedures, lower extremity surgical volume, non invasive vascular lab ultrasound study distribution and lower extremity wound clinic volume.

Venous Disease Outcomes

Venous Disease

Venous Disease outcomes include information about treatments for patients with varicose veins, deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and other venous diseases.

Cerebrovascular Disease Outcomes

Cerebrovascular Disease

Cerebrovascular disease outcomes include patient volume and complications associated with carotid stenting, diagnostic angiograms and carotid endarterectomy.

Thoracic Surgery Outcomes

Thoracic Surgery

Includes surgery volume mortality, distribution for pulmonary resection lobectomy, length-of-stay data and esophageal surgery.

Preventive Cardiology Outcomes

Preventive Cardiology

Preventive cardiology and rehabilitation tracks outcomes on numerous cardiovascular risk factors, including emerging nontraditional cardiac risk factors. The Cardiac Rehabilitation Program reports outcomes related to quality of life, functional capacity, blood pressure and compliance.

Cardiothoracic Anesthesia Outcomes

Cardiothoracic Anesthesia

Cardiothoracic anesthesiology provides anesthesiology services for heart and vascular patients.  The department is constantly evolving to parallel changes in cardiac surgery procedures, such as those for the treatment of heart failure and complex valve procedures.

Surgical Quality Improvement Outcomes

Surgical Quality Improvement

Includes data from Hospital Compare: Surgical Care Improvement Project (SCIP), a website hosted by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) in collaboration with the Hospital Quality Alliance (HQA).

Patient Experience Outcomes

Patient Experience

Includes ratings for outpatient and inpatient care and services, including HCAHPS assessments.

Includes innovations involving Cleveland Clinic's surgeons, physicians and cardiologists.
