History & Physical Examination
An early step in diagnosis, doctors test movement, sensation, vision, hearing, language and cognition.
Your doctor will ask questions about your family and personal medical history and examine you to better understand your condition.
Focal neurological deficits found during this examination can help your doctor diagnose specific epilepsy syndrome and neurological conditions, such as an impairment of movement, sensation, vision, hearing, language and cognition.
The following examinations will be performed:
- Examination of the head for scars, notation of head size, congenital or birth defects.
- Examination of the skin for light brown patches of skin called "café au lait spots," clumps of fibrous or hard tissue on the skin called ‘fibrous plaques,’ specific skin lesions called shagreen patches, angiomas, linear nevus, and neurofibromas.
- Examination of the eye and vision for defects in the peripheral vision, eye movement abnormalities and visual acuity, as well as examination of the retina.
- Examination of the rest of the body for heart murmurs, along with blood pressure testing.
