Overview

Overview

The Department of Outcomes Research was founded by Daniel Sessler, MD in 2005 and now has more than 65 permanent members, including 21 attending physicians, 18 research fellows, eight statisticians, and regulatory coordinators. It is the largest single-center clinical research group in the field of anesthesiology.

The department supports every aspect of clinical research, including sample-size estimates, trial coordination, data handling, statistical analysis, and regulatory functions. Most importantly, it provides academic collaboration and assistance with study design and execution for investigator-initiated research. As part of Cleveland Clinic, the department is non-profit with the mission of “Providing the evidence for evidence-based medicine.”

The department’s mission is to be the world’s leading clinical anesthesia research site. We aspire to:

  • Publish more high-impact, peer-reviewed clinical research papers (quantified as number multiplied by impact) than any other anesthesia department.
  • Recruit more extra-mural clinical research funding than any other anesthesia department, with “clinical research” being defined as research conducted with human subjects.
  • Train clinical investigators, including residents, fellows, and staff throughout Cleveland Clinic's healthcare system.

The department on average publishes a full peer-reviewed paper every 4.5 days. This makes it by far the world's most prolific clinical anesthesia research site.

Research Education

Research Education

Research education is a priority for the Department and we train medical students, graduate students, residents, and faculty. All have opportunities to participate in all aspects of clinical research including study design, case-report preparation, IRB approval, data acquisition, statistical analysis, interpretation of results, and manuscript preparation.

Additional research education opportunities include weekly staff meeting where we review ongoing prospective studies and discuss various challenges. We also present proposed studies for discussion and the results of completed studies. The Department present weekly Fundamentals of Clinical Research seminars. The seminars represent a year-long course in clinical research methodology and are open to the entire Cleveland Clinic community.

Outcomes Research also organizes the Annual Resident Research Day (featuring a distinguished visiting professor with recognized research credentials). And finally, Department faculty teach research methodology in the residents’ lecture series and for the Clinic’s medical school. Residents are encouraged to participate in research and many do. Our goal is to publish at least 20 full papers per year with resident co-authors.
