What is hyaluronic acid/dextranome (Deflux®)?

Hyaluronic acid/dextranome (Deflux) is a gel-like medicine that contains complex sugars. It is used to treat a problem called vesicoureteral reflux (VUR), a condition that affects the urine drainage system in children. Deflux is placed into the area along the urine drainage system where the problem is found. It corrects or improves the problem in most cases. It is a treatment that can be used instead of reconstructive surgery.

What is vesicoureteral reflux?

The urine drainage system has four main parts:

  • The kidneys remove waste products from the blood. They also regulate the level of fluid in the body.
  • The ureters are the tubes that carry the urine from the kidneys to the bladder.
  • Urine is stored in the bladder.
  • The urethra is the tube through which urine passes from the bladder out of the body.

Sometimes, there is a problem and urine flows backward from the bladder to the kidneys. Backward flow of the urine is called reflux. Vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) occurs in about 10 percent of children. It can affect one ureter and kidney or both.

The most common symptom of VUR is a urinary tract infection (UTI). These infections that keep coming back can lead to scarring of the kidneys, high blood pressure, and even end-stage kidney disease.
