Our Integrated Hospital Care Institute (IHI) is the home of hospital-based services — bringing the departments of Emergency Medicine, Hospital Medicine, Pulmonary-Critical Care, Infectious Disease and Anesthesiology all under one umbrella. IHI also has two centers: Critical Care and Perioperative Medicine, which advance clinical care, education and research across these specialties.
Our referring physician team is here for you 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. (EST) every day. You can refer a patient or check on their status.
At Cleveland Clinic, we listen to your thoughts and empower you to make an impact — ensuring that as we grow, you do as well.
From clinical excellence to research opportunities, discover how our programs support your growth every step of the way.
The hospital-based services in IHI work collaboratively with Cleveland Clinic’s hospitals to reimagine the patient journey — ensuring seamless access to high-quality care and driving research innovation. By bringing specialists together across disciplines, IHI enhances patient care, streamlines treatment and improves hospital efficiency.
“The IHI at Cleveland Clinic is a unique model that does not exist elsewhere in healthcare. Together, we embrace innovation and collaboration to reimagine the patient journey. It’s our goal to provide seamless access to our high-quality care and cutting-edge research to more patients in more locations throughout the United States and across the globe.” — Dr. Raed Dweik

As one of the world’s leading academic medical centers, we can often draw on the expertise of our colleagues in other specialties.
The Integrated Hospital Care Institute is dedicated to innovation, safety, quality, research and education and a deep compassion for the patient experience. We treat the individual as well as the disease. For example, our emergency, critical care and hospital medicine teams work closely to ensure patients experience seamless, coordinated care throughout their inpatient journey.
We deliver expert care across 29 emergency departments — including one Level I and two Level II trauma centers — most of which are Geriatric Emergency Department-accredited. Our teams manage high-acuity patients, with many arriving via EMS, and support nearly two-thirds of all system admissions. Cleveland Clinic Immediate Care extends access through our Urgent Cares, Express Cares and Express Care Online platform.
Our 24/7 hospitalist program spans seven hospitals and manages some of the highest-acuity patients in the country. Physician-APP teams provide expert inpatient care and lead clinical education for internal medicine residents and medical students. The department is a leader in innovation, including piloting a mobile discharge team to improve throughput and patient experience.
We provide advanced pulmonary, critical care and infectious disease services, attracting patients from across the country. Our team leads one of the nation’s largest critical care programs, with nationally recognized programs in ECMO, liver ICU care and post-ICU recovery. We also innovate across care delivery, including virtual ICU rounds, tele-critical care and rapid sepsis response.
We provide comprehensive care across general and subspecialty infectious disease, with programs spanning HIV, transplant ID, endocarditis, nontuberculosis mycobacteria/granuloma and neurologic infections. Our team leads efforts in antimicrobial stewardship, infection prevention and outpatient IV antibiotic management. Innovations in care delivery include virtual consultations, a pharmacy-led travel clinic and specialized post-COVID care.
One of the largest programs in the country, our department provides anesthesia and critical care across 200+ ORs, 100+ non-OR sites and nine hospitals. We deliver advanced care in cardiothoracic, transplant and pediatric surgery, and lead nationally in procedural sedation and intensive care. Our subspecialty teams drive innovation in perioperative imaging, pain management and minimally invasive approaches.
