Using Peridex Mouthwash

One way to prevent infection while you are recovering in the hospital is to use a special mouthwash every day. This mouthwash is called Peridex. Please look over the information below to learn more about Peridex and how to use it.

  • Peridex is an antibacterial mouthwash that your doctor prescribed for you to use while in the hospital. You will also use Peridex after you go home.
  • This mouthwash contains Chlorhexidine Gluconate (CHG). It kills germs and fights infections.
  • Studies have shown that using Peridex greatly reduces the amount of germs in your mouth.
  • Using Peridex helps reduce the risk of infection while you are recovering.
  • Use the mouthwash twice a day. First, brush your teeth; then, rinse with the mouthwash for 30 seconds. Do not swallow the mouthwash.
  • Do not rinse your mouth with water, eat, drink or brush your teeth right after using Peridex.
  • You may have an unusual or unpleasant taste in your mouth after using the mouthwash. You may also notice that your sense of taste is weaker.
  • Tell your doctor or nurse right away if you develop a rash; hives; itching; trouble breathing; tightness in your chest; swelling of your mouth, face, lips, or tongue; numbness or tingling in your mouth; sores or irritation in your mouth; or swelling that you didn’t have before using Peridex.
  • Ask your doctor or nurse about using Peridex after you leave the hospital. And, be sure to let them know if you have any questions or concerns about using Peridex.
