Carotid Artery Duplex Vascular Ultrasound

What is a carotid artery duplex vascular ultrasound?

A carotid artery duplex vascular ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to check blood flow to your brain.

Why do I need this test?

Your doctor will use this test to check for blocked areas in the blood vessels that send blood to your brain. This test is often ordered before surgery, especially open heart surgery.

How does the test work?

A special wand sends sound waves through your body’s tissues. The waves bounce off the blood cells moving through your blood vessels. This creates pictures that are seen on a computer screen.

How long is the test?

The ultrasound takes about 30 to 45 minutes to complete.

Are there any risks or side effects?

No. There are no harmful side effects of this test. And, unlike X-rays, an ultrasound does not use radiation.

How do I prepare for the test?

There are no special instructions to follow before the test.

  • Take all your medicine and eat and drink as you normally do.
  • Please do not bring valuables, like jewelry and credit cards, with you to the hospital.
  • Wear a loose-fitting shirt that does not cover your neck.

What happens during the test?

  • An ultrasound technologist will perform your test.
  • You will lie on a padded exam table during the test.
  • We will put a small amount of gel on your neck. The gel does not hurt your skin or stain your clothes.
  • We will move a small wand (transducer) over your neck. It is held in place until the blood flow information has been recorded.
  • You may hear noises when the technologist listens to the blood flow and records measurements.

How will I feel during the test?

The ultrasound does not cause pain. The gel may feel cool, and you will feel some pressure as the wand moves over your skin. Please let us know if you feel anything unusual during the test.

What happens after the test?

  • We will wipe the gel off your skin, and then you can go home or to other appointments, if you have them.
  • You do not need to follow any special instructions to follow after the test.

How do I get my test results?

A vascular medicine doctor will review the test results and send a report to your doctor to share with you.
