Airway Obstruction and Tracheotomy

Narrowing of the voice box (larynx) and the windpipe (trachea) are uncommon but can be debilitating and possibly life threatening problems for children. They can be due to a birth defect, infection, or injury. Accurate diagnosis is essential in determining the underlying cause and providing the appropriate management. Treatment can range from simple laser surgery, to complex airway reconstruction of the cartilage framework of these organs.

While we specialize in the care of children who require a tracheotomy in order to be able to breathe, our goal is to employ appropriate surgical techniques that restore the integrity of the airway so as to relieve your child of the need for a tracheotomy.

The Section of Pediatric Otolaryngology at Cleveland Clinic has developed and refined special techniques for airway reconstruction, tracheotomy, vocal cord paralysis, and laryngeal and tracheal stenosis in order to achieve this goal.

Our Airway Clinic is a unique multidisciplinary team of pediatric otolaryngologists, pediatric pulmonary specialists, speech therapists and respiratory therapists. They work with children and their families in establishing an accurate diagnosis and developing a treatment plan that, in time, results in healthy unobstructed breathing.
