Biography

About Ajay Gupta, MD

Ajay Gupta, M.D. is the head of the section of Pediatric Epilepsy in the Epilepsy Center/Neurological Institute. He is Associate Professor at The Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine, Case Western Reserve University. He is also the founder director of multidisciplinary Tuberous Sclerosis Program at the Cleveland Clinic.

Dr. Gupta is an expert in the field of childhood and adolescent epilepsy with emphasis on epilepsy surgery evaluation, difficult to treat epilepsy, and management of epilepsy in the setting of cortical dysplasias and neurocutaneous disorders such as Tuberous Sclerosis Complex and Sturge-Weber syndrome.  Dr. Gupta is also a skilled specialist in intra-operative neurophysiological techniques used during brain surgery to map regions of brain for critical function (motor, speech control etc.) as well as malfunction (seizure origin, brain tumors etc.). His expertise attracts national and international consultations from families and practicing Neurologists who seek a second opinion. Dr. Gupta is recognized in the Consumers' Research Council's 'Top Physicians' of America", and Marquis "Who's Who in America".

Dr. Gupta is an accomplished physician, clinical researcher and educator whose talents are tapped by a variety of organizations. He serves on the Pediatric Program Committee, and has served on the Scientific Program Committee of the American Epilepsy Society. He serves on the editorial board of two prestigious international journals in the field, ‘Epileptic disorders’ and ‘Pediatric Neurology’. The International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE), world’s top organization on Epilepsy care, appointed him to the task force that is charged with developing novel diagnostic methods for cortical dysplasia, the most common cause of refractory epilepsy in children. Dr. Gupta also works on the Professional and Scientific Board of the U.S. Tuberous Sclerosis Alliance. He serves on the peer-review panel of national and international journals including Annals of Neurology, Brain and Development, Epilepsia, Epilepsy and Behavior, and European Journal of Pediatric Neurology. He is a fellow member of the American Academy of Neurology, American Epilepsy Society, Child Neurology Society, International Child Neurology Association, and American Academy of Pediatrics. He is also a member of the international affairs committee of the US Child Neurology Society.

Dr. Gupta has made innovative and pioneering contributions to advance the field of epilepsy surgery and treatment of epilepsy in children. He has authored more than 75 original research articles and review papers in the peer-reviewed international journals and textbooks. He mentors resident and fellow trainees from US and abroad during their Neurology and Epilepsy fellowships, and some of them have received highly competitive Junior Investigator Research Awards at the American Epilepsy Society annual meetings. As an advocate of medical education and training, Dr. Gupta has chaired, directed and served as faculty in Epilepsy/EEG courses, workshops, and seminars at the national and international conferences. He also serves as a volunteer faculty for the International League against Epilepsy (ILAE) for epilepsy training of professionals in the developing countries.

After graduating from the University of Punjab, India, Dr. Gupta completed residency and fellowship training in Neurology, Child Neurology, and EEG/Neurophysiology at The Cleveland Clinic Foundation. He also did a clinical research fellowship in Medical Genetics at The St. George’s Hospital Medical School, London, United Kingdom. Dr. Gupta is board certified in Pediatrics, Neurology and EEG/Clinical Neurophysiology.
