Experience: Dr. Li has performed more than 2000 percutaneous diagnostic and interventional coronary and cardiac procedures and has a special interest in coronary interventions, particularly those performed with intravascular imaging guidance for optimal outcomes. He employs advanced interventional techniques and often treats complex coronary artery diseases that require bifurcation techniques, atherectomy, intravascular lithotripsy, or hemodynamic support. He is also experienced in valvular heart disease procedures and treating critically ill patients with cardiogenic shock using mechanical circulatory support.

Education: Dr. Li earned his medical degree from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He completed his initial training there with residencies in internal medicine and cardiology. He began his subspecialty training as a fellow in interventional cardiology at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre of the University of Toronto and then pursued additional training through an interventional cardiology fellowship at Stanford Medical Center, Stanford, California.

Dr. Li was appointed to the Cleveland Clinic medical staff in 2021 on completion of his Stanford fellowship. He was appointed Assistant Professor of Medicine at Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University October 2023.

Research, Publications and Speaking: Dr. Li has been involved in the research and development of intracardiac medical devices and imaging technology since 2005. His innovations include hybrid intravascular IVUS-OCT, 3D intra-cardiac echocardiography, interstitial OCT, and 4D image processing algorithm for use with cardiac MRI. Beginning while he was an undergraduate design engineering student at the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada, he co-invented and completed the initial development of a 3D forward-viewing intracardiac echocardiography (ICE) catheter, as well as a hybrid intravascular imaging catheter combining intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) and optical coherence tomography (OCT). The 3D ICE catheter works to visualize cardiac structures better and guide procedures, and the hybrid IVUS-OCT Brian Li, MD, FRCPC, is an interventional cardiologist in the Section of Regional Cardiovascular Medicine in the Tomsich Family Department of Cardiovascular Medicine of The Sydell and Arnold Miller Family Heart, Vascular & Thoracic Institute. He have outpatient clinics patients at Richard E. Jacobs Health Center, Lorain Family Health and Surgery Center, and the Elyria Family Health Center. His cardiac catheterization and interventional procedures are based at Cleveland Clinic Fairview Hospital.

Outside of cardiology, in 2020 Dr. Li led the design and production of an N95-equivalent full-face mask for COVID-19 using 3D printing technology and off-the-shelf snorkel masks.

About Dr. Li: “I have a passion for interventional cardiology because it combines incredible clinical medicine with cutting-edge technology. I feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to care for patients and perform minimally invasive heart procedures. Because a lot of what we do are only made possible by technological advancements, I also look forward to pushing the frontiers of our care as a physician innovator.”

Leisure Activities: In his spare time, Dr. Li enjoys photography, reading, culinary arts and spending time with his family.
