Biography

About Michael MacKechnie, MD

Dr. MacKechnie earned his medical degree from McGill University Faculty of Medicine in Quebec. He completed the Orthopaedic Surgery Residency program at University of Toronto. Dr. MacKechnie completed the Clinical Fellowship in Orthopaedic Surgery Sports Medicine program at University of California – Los Angeles, where he worked as the assistant team physician to the Los Angeles Lakers and the UCLA Bruins football team. Dr. MacKechnie has a wide experience of working with athletes, from social to high school to college and professional.

From a teenager playing soccer to a senior who enjoys tennis, Dr. MacKechnie understands that everyone’s goals vary. He takes time to include patients in the decision-making process.

"I want to speak with patients and use my expertise to craft a treatment plan that works well for their lifestyle, while following the latest guidelines and research," he said.

It’s that ability to help people get back to the things they want to do that Dr. MacKechnie says he loves most about his job. Among the skills that help him do that is arthroscopic surgery, including hip arthroscopy, which is a minimally invasive approach used to repair or reconstruct the hip joint. This newer surgery is typically only performed by surgeons with fellowship experience.

"The benefit to patients is that they have faster recovery, lower chance of infection, less pain, and overall better results," he said.

Prior to joining Cleveland Clinic Martin Health, Dr. MacKechnie has practiced as an orthopaedic sports medicine surgery attending physician in Maine, and was a Clinical Instructor at Dartmouth College's Faculty of Medicine.

Every experience I have ever had with Dr. McKechnie and his staff has been 10 out of 10. He is concerned, kind, thorough, courteous, respectful, and goes above and beyond. He's an amazing surgeon but he's also an amazing person.

One of the best Doctors I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. He genuinely cares about his patients and actually takes the time to address their concerns. A lost artform with other doctors.

Dr Mackechnie is a really good doctor. He's caring, listens to his patients, addresses their concerns & I've enjoyed being his patient. Well sorta because I hope that I won't need to see him in the future but if I do need an Orthopaedic surgeon, he'd be my choice.

Michelle and Dr. MacKechnie both provided excellent care during the telehealth visit. Both are kind, compassionate and expert.
