Biography

About Michelle Biehl, MD

Dr. Biehl is a pulmonologist and critical care physician at the Respiratory Institute at the Cleveland Clinic. She earned her medical degree from the Pontificia Universidade Catolica do Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, graduated from Internal Medicine residency at University of Miami, FL, and completed fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN.

Dr. Biehl has a long-standing interest in the fields critical care outcomes, intensive care unit (ICU) survivorship and humanizing the ICU. She earned a master’s degree in clinical and translational science at Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, and has published multiple studies on long-term outcomes in ICU survivors and the physical, cognitive and psychological impairments that occur after critical illness. In 2018 she joined Cleveland Clinic, and in 2019 she founded the Post-ICU Recovery Clinic, which she currently directs. The Post-ICU Recovery Clinic is a multidisciplinary clinic composed of a pulmonary/critical care physician, a pharmacist, a physical therapist and a respiratory therapist. The goal of the program is to help ICU survivors in their journey to healing and recovery.

Dr. Biehl is a member of the “MICU Patient/Family Experience” Committee, of the “ABCDEF Optimization Bundle Project: F (Family)” Work Group; and a Respiratory Institute “Wellness Champion” at the Cleveland Clinic. Dr. Biehl is a select member of the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM), and was a speaker for the 2022 Critical Care Congress. Dr. Biehl is a member of the American Thoracic Society (ATS), as well as of the ATS “Women in Critical Care (WICC)” Interest Group.
