Biography

About Sandip Vasavada, MD

Sandip Vasavada, MD serves as the Urologic Director, Center for Female Urology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery, at Cleveland Clinic within the Glickman Urological Institute. Together with his other colleagues he helps represent one of the largest centers for female urology and reconstructive genitourinary surgery in the country. He is also Professor of Surgery (Urology) at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine and has a joint appointment with the Women's Institute. He is the Miller Family Endowed Chair of Female Pelvic Health as well. 

Dr. Vasavada completed his medical school training in the competitive six-year combined BS/MD program at Northeastern Ohio Medical University (NEOMED). He completed his Urologic Surgery Residency at Cleveland Clinic and then began a fellowship in female urology, neuro-urology and female pelvic reconstruction at the UCLA School of Medicine in Los Angeles California. He then joined the staff as Assistant Professor of Urology at Thomas Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia prior to returning to Cleveland Clinic.

Dr. Vasavada has published numerous manuscripts and book chapters in the area of urinary incontinence and pelvic floor disorders and has been named to "Top Docs" in?Philadelphia?and?Cleveland?magazines for over 20 years. He has published three textbooks,?the first?entitled Female Urology, Urogynecology and Voiding Dysfunction (Marcel-Dekker, N.Y., 2005) and his second book on?Female Urology and Pelvic Organ Prolapse?with co-author Howard B.?Goldman, MD (Humana Publishing, 2007) and then completed his third textbook entitled?Complex Cases in Female Urology and Reconstruction. He has authored over?100 manuscripts and over 25 book chapters, been part of several NIH trials and has published numerous abstracts and surgical videos.?He has lectured and demonstrated surgical techniques around the world in over 20 countries. Dr. Vasavada is a reviewer for seven major journals in the field of urology, urogynecology?and voiding dysfunction. He has served on the American Board of Urology Exam Committee and has helped author each edition of the American Urological Association (AUA) and Society of Urodynamics and Female Pelvic Medicine and Urogenital Reconstruction (SUFU) Guidelines in Overactive Bladder. He helped author the AUA and SUFU Stress Urinary Incontinence Guidelines as well.  Dr. Vasavada has been a member of the Executive Committee of his society, SUFU, for over 10 years and has just completed a 2-year term as President of SUFU. 

Dr. Vasavada's main clinical interests lie in the area of urinary incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse and complex reconstruction of the lower urinary tract. He also specializes in the management of complications of vaginal and lower urinary tract surgery and pelvic floor reconstruction. His current research interests are in the field of refractory bladder overactivity and neuromodulation and care pathways for optimizing care in patients undergoing incontinence and prolapse surgery.

Dr. Vasavada's reputation has clearly been earned - he exudes confidence and competence without arrogance. He made me feel like I was in very good hands for the surgery and took plenty of time to talk with me about the outcome during my post-op. I am hopeful that any remaining incontinence will disappear over time - already, it has been a huge improvement and positive impact on my lifestyle.

Dr. Vasavada was one of the easiest doctors to discuss my health issues with -- he is kind, patient, respectful, explained my condition to me that I could easily understand and follow with him as he spoke with me. This was an excellent experience. Scheduling an appointment was easy.
