Umesh N. Khot, MD, is a Vice Chairman of the Robert and Suzanne Tomsich Department of Cardiovascular Medicine, the Director of Regional Cardiovascular Medicine, and the Heart, Vascular and Thoracic Institute Chief Compliance Officer. He is a staff cardiologist in the Section of Clinical Cardiology in the Sydell and Arnold Miller Family Heart, Vascular & Thoracic Institute. His clinical specialties include coronary artery disease, heart attack care, heart valve disease and heart failure. He is board-certified in cardiovascular medicine and echocardiography.
A graduate of The Ohio State University College of Medicine, Dr. Khot completed a residency in internal medicine at Stanford University Medical Center followed by a fellowship in cardiovascular medicine at Cleveland Clinic. He was appointed to the medical staff in 2011.
Prior to his appointment to the Cleveland Clinic staff, Dr. Khot was director of the Noninvasive Vascular Laboratory with Indiana Heart Physicians and director of the EHART® STEMI Program at St. Francis Heart Center in Indianapolis. He also was a member of the Practice Executive Committee and a member of the St. Francis Heart Center Cardiac Operations Group. EHART® is a specialized triage and treatment protocol developed by Dr. Khot to reduce the time-to-treatment for heart attack patients who come to the emergency room. This protocol has led not only to improved time-to-treatment but also to an increased rate of survival after the heart attack. The American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology have recognized this protocol as a major advance in heart attack care.
Dr. Khot is a world expert in the design of heart attack systems of care with his work being highlighted by multiple medical journals and the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology. He also has extensive experience in healthcare information technology, clinical operations, and financial management of complex healthcare systems. His work has been awarded the HIMSS Davies Award for best information technology project nationally, the State of Ohio Patient Safety Institute Best Practice Award, and the Best Achievement of Operational Excellence in Healthcare.
Dr. Khot is the author of a number of research articles in leading medical journals, including The New England Journal of Medicine, Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), Journal of the American College of Cardiology and Circulation. He has contributed to novel understanding of the role of vasodilator therapy in severe aortic stenosis, the association between risk factors and heart disease, and insights into outcomes in patients with myocardial infarction, heart failure, and heart surgery. His research has been cited within the practice guidelines of the American College of Cardiology, American Heart Association, and European Society of Cardiology. Dr. Khot has been a reviewer for JAMA, Circulation, American Heart Journal, Nature Practice Cardiovascular Medicine and American Journal of Cardiology. He is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology.
Dr. Khot enjoys spending time with his four children, traveling, and exploring the outdoors.
