What is quantum computing?

Quantum computing is a new type of computing that harnesses the laws of quantum mechanics to solve problems faster and more accurately than even the most powerful supercomputer. Its abilities can help researchers break through traditional scientific bottlenecks and identify new medicines and treatments.

How does a quantum computer work?

Whether you're using a desktop, laptop, cell phone or smart device – the computer you are using relies on what we call classical computing. Classical computing uses a series of 1s and 0s known as bits to solve problems. You can think of bits as a light switch. It is either on or off. 

A quantum computer does not use bits. Instead, it uses qubits that leverage the properties of quantum mechanics to exist in multiple states at the same time. You can picture qubits as a dimmer switch with endless combinations of how much light is in the room. This is extremely important for problems that have many possible outcomes like drug discovery, clinical trials and personalized medicine.
