Awards & Recognition

Awards & Recognition

Cleveland Clinic Akron General is recognized regionally and within Ohio for its expertise and care.

American College of Nursing
Akron General achieves Magnet status

Outstanding nursing care has long been the hallmark of Akron General and was again validated by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), which bestowed “Magnet” status on Akron General and the nurses who work at Akron General Medical Center and the Health System’s three Health & Wellness Centers.

ANCC, a subsidiary of the American Nurses Association, grants Magnet status when a healthcare organization reflects nursing professionalism, teamwork and superiority in patient care. Fewer than 400 of the country’s 6,000-plus hospitals have earned this prestigious honor during ANCC’s 24 years of awarding Magnet designation.

Magnet recognition has become the gold standard for nursing excellence. To achieve Magnet recognition, Akron General had to pass a rigorous and lengthy process that demanded widespread participation from leadership and staff and, ultimately, proved that the organization met national benchmarks for several criteria, including patient outcomes and satisfaction, nursing practice, education and involvement in decision-making.

Level I Trauma Center
Excellent care for every emergency

A Level I Trauma Center, as designated by the American College of Surgeons (ACS), Akron General Medical Center offers the technology, expertise and staffing to treat all injuries regardless of severity. Operating rooms, diagnostic services and trauma specialists are on-call 24 hours a day.

All emergencies are about recovery, but it's especially important to trauma victims. More severe injuries may require additional or specialized medical attention, now and in the future. Akron General provides patients with comprehensive care from the time of injury all the way to recovery. This includes treatment while admitted and after discharge, such as therapy and rehabilitation.

Our verification as a Level I Trauma Center also means that Akron General Medical Center seeks ways to help speed up and improve urgent care delivery through clinical research and education of healthcare professionals involved in trauma care - from the time of injury all the way to rehabilitation.

American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer
Outstanding Achievement Award

Akron General's McDowell Cancer Institute is the only Akron cancer hospital to receive an Outstanding Achievement Award from the American College of Surgeons' Commission on Cancer. We offer the newest therapies, diagnostics and surgical techniques to help minimize side effects and improve outcomes.

Akron General participates in National Cancer Institute (NCI) sponsored clinical trials, as well as pharmaceutical industry sponsored trials. Membership in six NCI cooperative groups provides our patients with access to a wide menu of clinical trials. The American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer, the accrediting body for cancer centers nationwide, recommends a 6 percent accrual rate for commendation status. We have annually met or exceeded that benchmark.

Autism Friendly Designation

Cleveland Clinic Akron General partnered with the Autism Society of Great Akron to be designated an Autism Friendly hospital. The designation included extensive caregiver training about autism spectrum disorder (ASD), including understanding the characteristics of autism, co-occurring conditions that may exist, and support procedures for better medical outcomes and patient experiences.

A nationally recognized wellness philosophy

More than 20 years ago, Akron General took its first step down a previously untraveled road. The organization believed that the future of medicine would shift from a sick-care, inpatient environment to a more comprehensive model structured around prevention, wellness and the delivery of outpatient services. With that first step, Akron General constructed its first Health & Wellness Center.

Since then, Akron General has offered innovative outpatient services through its Health & Wellness Center model, which incorporates integrated outpatient clinical care, prevention and rehabilitation. At the three Health & Wellness Centers, patients have access to 24-hour, free-standing emergency rooms, radiology, cardiac and pulmonary testing, intensive outpatient psychiatry, lab services, physical and occupational therapy, sports medicine, a wide variety of primary and specialty care physicians, as well as a sleep center and the Ambulatory Surgery Center at Health & Wellness, Bath.

Additionally, the Centers are home to LifeStyles, Akron General’s award-winning, medically supervised fitness program, as well as a wide range of wellness services, including nutritional counseling. Since 1999, Akron General LifeStyles at our Health & Wellness Centers has been named as Club Industry magazine's number-one hospital-owned fitness center in the country and has received countless other national, regional and local awards.

The LifeStyles model drives change in biometric measures and incorporates medical oversight right on the fitness floor. Rehabilitation for cardiac and physical therapy patients is done side-by-side with members who are exercising to stay well, as well as those who may have already graduated from rehabilitation.
